    Students learn application of public health principles to problems and challenges transcending national boundaries, and to gain an understanding of the complex array of global and local forces affecting the health of diverse international populations. Utilizing knowledge from nursing, global health, and social science, standards of international public health nursing are applied to globally diverse populations. Clinical experiences incorporate best practices for population-based assessment, disease prevention and management, risk reduction and health promotion in a variety of multicultural, community-based settings.     This course explores the impact of physiological, psychological, cognitive, sociocultural and environmental factors on mental health/illness across an individual's lifespan. Students integrate this foundational knowledge with understanding of social determinants of health, learning to identify and assess individual, family and group needs. Students will apply evidence-based interventions across the continuum of care and develop advanced communication skills, including motivational interviewing, to engage individuals and families in mental health promotion and treatment.     This course focuses on knowledge and skills for effective leadership and management of patient care in a collaborative environment. Didactic study will focus on developing the ability of students to see nursing practice as a part of a complex system. Students will examine systems thinking and complexity, development of leadership roles and skills, interprofessional communication and teamwork, and leading change in healthcare organizations. The course will examine the nurse's role in improvement science and patient care delivery, focusing on quality improvement processes, patient safety, nurse sensitive process and outcomes measures. A variety of experiences will provide opportunities to synthesize the multi-dimensional aspects of nursing and provide the environment which facilitates transition to professional nursing practice. Principles of leadership, accountability and change will be applied to clinical practice as the student begins to operationalize the professional nursing role. Prerequisites: Full Major status in Nursing.

    This course prepares students with foundational knowledge and skills for evidence-based practice in an applied learning environment. The course incorporates the principles and processes for evidence-based practice, including the application of best available evidence, clinical judgement, and patient-centered care. Students demonstrate learning through completion of program-specific evidence-based scholarly project. Discipline-specific written and verbal presentation skills are developed and refined as students generate a learning project targeted toward a specific population or clinical focus area.     Transitional care needs of people with complex health and social needs, and those of family caregivers are often poorly managed. This course focuses on the knowledge needed to care for patients at particular moments across the continuum of care and through transitions in an illness experience. It addresses nursing phenomena of concern and common pathways of illness, with an emphasis on family-centered care through transitions in the illness and recovery phases. Transitional care includes a range of time-limited services designed to ensure health care continuity as individuals move from one level of care to another, among multiple health care team members, and across settings.
