This course delves into the history, theory, and practice of games to better understand what it means, and has meant, to play. Japan will be our geographical focus, but the goal is to engage intellectually and experientially with games and gaming in their multifarious forms and contexts. To that end we will study and play a wide variety of games: tabletop games (go, sugoroku, sh'gi), card games (Pokémon TCG, karuta, hanafuda), poetry competitions (utaawase) and poetic acrostics, matching games (monoawase), and video games (terebi g'mu). Course taught in English; no knowledge of Japanese necessary.
