    The course focuses on developing Intermediate level of language and cultural proficiency in the Japanese language enabling students to communicate in various target language contexts. The course aims at further developing students' language skills through a well-balanced acquisition of vocabulary, grammar, and cultural knowledge that will reinforce their understanding of diverse life experiences and facilitate fluent, appropriate, and culturally nuanced language interpretation and use. This course is designed for students who have completed 1010 to 2020. 150 new kanji will be introduced, bringing the total number to 500. Required course for the minor/major. Continued development of all four skills (speaking, listening, writing, reading) in all areas at the paragraph level, through the study of grammar, expressions, and socio-cultural knowledge needed to communicate at the intermediate level. 150 new kanji will be introduced, bringing the total number to 650.     Required course for the major/minor. This course is designed as a first course for students who learned Japanese while residing in Japan for at least one year. The aim is increased proficiency in reading and speaking at different levels of formality and with greater cultural nuance. Emphasis on reading, writing, and expansion of kanji knowledge. Total kanji knowledge of 600 characters by the end of the course. Students can receive 16 credit hours retroactively by passing this course with a grade of B- or higher.
