    The course focuses on developing Advanced level of language and cultural proficiency in the Italian language enabling students to communicate in various target language contexts. The course aims at further developing students' language skills through an advanced acquisition of vocabulary, grammar, and cultural knowledge that will reinforce their understanding of diverse life experiences and facilitate fluent, appropriate, and culturally nuanced language interpretation and use. Intensive reading and writing as a basis for a systematic review of the syntax, morphology, and lexicon of Italian. First course for students who learned the language through residence in Italy or an Italian-speaking environment. Prerequisite: Italian speaking country for 1 to 2 years or ITAL 3040.

    A content-based course involving extensive reading, as well as film viewing and informal writing, to develop oral skills in Italian.

    In this survey course students will learn about the history of Italian cinema and the role film has played in addressing Italy's changing social and cultural landscapes. The works studied range from the internationality acclaimed to the niche successes of both major and minor directors. Films are shown with English subtitles. Class discussion is conducted in English.

This class is a one credit hour supplement to another three credit hour course notated on the schedule and must be taken with the corresponding course.     Involves students in thoughtfully organized service through community-engaged leaning. Students have the opportunity to use and expand their language skills and cross-cultural understanding while doing community-engaged learning projects on campus and in the local community. Academically the course seeks to provide a better understanding of challenges and problems faced by immigrants and their communities. This course entails lectures and readings, cross-cultural communications through simulation exercises, and community service in the Salt Lake region. Prerequisites: ITAL 3040 OR ITAL 3060.
