It provides an overview of what it is like to study a second language, as well as an overview of the U.S. language industry and language careers. The course is also designed to help students develop a clearer focus on their educational and occupational goals, as well as creating a sense of belonging in our department, college, and community. Students will learn a variety of techniques and strategies to increase their oral proficiency in a variety of social, educational and cultural settings. Native-speaking students or those who have acquired proficiency through residence in the target language community are not eligible to take this class.

Students will read examples of writing in various modes (such as description, narration, exposition, and argument), write short compositions in those modes. This course builds on students' existing language foundation to enhance both their written and oral skills.
