  The history of visual art and culture from circa 1850 into the early 20th century. This course explores the European roots of Modernism, its dissemination to North America and its global manifestations. Areas of study will include Impressionism to Art Nouveau, Women Artists of the Fin-de-Siècle, Modernism in Canada and Latin America as well as Native American and Asian Modernisms. The political, social, and intellectual histories that inform the arts as well as pertinent cross-cultural considerations will provide the context for exploring these global modernisms. Prerequisite:    ANTH 1000 and ARTH 1090 and ARTH 1100 and ARTH 2050 and ENGL 2010 and ENGL 2015 and HIST 1500 and HIST 1510

  The history of visual art and culture from circa 1900 to the 1960s. This course explores the continuous evolution of Modernism. Areas of study will include Cubism to Vorticism, Colonialism and Modernism in Africa, Central European Avant-Gardes, International Dada and Surrealism, African-American Modernism and the crisis of Modernism in the post-colonial, post-war global community. The political, social, and intellectual histories that inform the arts as well as pertinent cross-cultural considerations will provide the context for exploring these global modernisms.

  This course will explore sites, like Mycenae, Athens, Olympia, and Delphi, and historical impacts, like the Persian War, spread of democracy, and Alexander the Great's campaigns, to study and understand the art and architecture created. We will approach these topics through the archaeology of the Greek world from the bronze age through the end of the hellenistic period (ca. 3000-30 BCE). This class will be centered around the objects to learn how Greek culture is studied through the places they built and the objects they made.
