"Techniques in Field Ornithology" is an immersive, hands-on course designed to provide students with practical experience in the methods used by wildlife biologists and professional ornithologists. Through field-based activities, students will be introduced to commonly used survey techniques, including point counts, line transects, territory mapping and the use of autonomous recording units (ARUs). The course also covers capture techniques such as mist netting, noose mats, and funnel traps, with a focus on safe and ethical bird handling. Students will learn to band birds and take standard field measurements, essential skills for tracking and studying avian populations. In addition, students will be introduced to vegetation sampling and habitat characterization methods to understand how environmental factors influence bird behavior and distribution. This course emphasizes experiential learning, allowing students to develop practical field skills that are foundational for careers in ornithology, wildlife biology, and conservation.
